"Stuart Dybek" is the title given for brief remarks on the induction into the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters of the writer of the same name. They were included in the Proceedings of the American Academy and Institute of Arts and Letters, 1994.

Summary[]

Chicago is as far from Europe and Asia as can be, with overly hot summers and winters that are too cold. Illinois is also called "the Land of Lincoln" after a singularly American genius. It is a city of unabashed provincialism, which often produces great writers. The Academy has finally admitted Dybek alongside the ranks of other "Windy City patriots" like Edgar Lee Masters, Carl Sandburg, Ernest Hemingway, Nelson Algren, and Saul Bellow. His work The Coast of Chicago examines the lives of "resourceful young survivors", finding beauty and meaning there.[1]
