We Are What We Pretend to Be is a posthumous collection published by Da Capo Press in 2012. It consists of two previously unpublished novellas: "Basic Training", Vonnegut's first known extended piece of fiction written in 1950, and his final, unfinished work "If God Were Alive Today". It features a forward by Vonnegut's daughter, Nanette. The title comes from the 1966 introduction to Mother Night.
